EICMA 2010: BMW S 1000 RR

BMW Mottorad has brought the 2010 S1000 RR, its race bike for the road, to the this year’s EICMA show in Milan. The bike is powered by a 999 cc (61 cubic inch), DOHC, inline-four screamer of an engine that revs to 14,000 rpm. Making 193 hp (starting 13,000 rpm) , the 2010 BMW S1000RR has the most powerful 1000cc production engine currently on the market. Its weighing of just 183kg (403.3 lbs) dry 204kg (449.5 lbs) fully fueled) it also has a very good power to weight ratio. The exhaust system is built as a 4-into-2-into-1 with an extending into large-volume pre-silencer and a short rear-end silencer.

Suspension is handled via a pair of massive 46mm front forks. Dual front Brembo four-piston radial calipers grab 320mm rotors, while out back a single-piston Brembo caliper grabs a 220mm disc. BMW have taken steps toward improving safety with its ABS optional system developed for the race track and DTC Dynamic Traction Control.

"The S 1000 RR represents an entirely new dimension for BMW Motorrad and the sport bike segment. At this price, we expect a significant number of customers to take advantage of our Pre-Sale program. In fact, all of our first month's production has already been sold through this program," stated the press release at the launch of the bike.

The bike costs $13,800 (under EUR10,000), which is good enough to compete with Japanese rivals like the Yamaha R1 and Honda CBR1000 RR.

  • Race ABS: $1,000 (EUR713)
  • Race ABS & Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) $1,480 (EUR1055)
  • Gear Shift Assistant: $450 (EUR312)
  • Anti Theft Alarm: $395 (EUR281)
