EICMA 2010: BMW HP2 Sport

One of the BMW models that captured our attention at this year’s edition of the EICMA show is the HP2 Sport. We are talking about a bike that “was designed for the ambitious sports rider and enthralls with numerous exclusive details that were previously restricted to racing, some making their first appearance in series vehicle production,” as the bike maker describes it.

The ride is based on the BMW R 1200 S and comes with a four stroke, two cylinder horizontally opposed Boxer air/oil-cooled, DOHC, with 4 valves per cylinder. The unit has a capacity of 1,170 cc and delivers 130 hp at 8,750 rpm and 115 Nm (85 lb-ft) at 6,000 rpm. The engine sends its power to the rear wheel via a six-speed transmission and a shaft.

The main frame and the front frame are made of steel tubes. The front suspension uses a BMW Telelever, with a wheel travel of 105 mm, while the rear one comes with a BMW Paralever setup, allowing the wheel to travel 120 mm.

The bike is fitted with a beefy braking system that uses twin 320 mm discs for the front axle and a single 265 mm disc for the rear one.

The two-wheeled creation tips the scales at 178 kg/ 392 lbs (this is the wet weight), using a 120/70 ZR17 front tire and a 190/55 ZR17 rear tire.

Of course, many riders just want to hear about the performance. And we are more than pleased to report that the bike needs 11.4 seconds to complete the quarter mile and offers a top speed of 248.7 km/h (154.5 mph).
