What an #eggtastrophe. A 66-year-old driver at the wheel of a semitrailer carrying eggs and egg product lost the entire load while driving uphill in Hegins, Pennsylvania.
Spoiler alert: the eggs predictably broke upon impact with the tarmac, creating the messiest mess you’re likely to see, ever. The Republican Herald reports that the driver didn’t even realize what had happened and continued to drive egg-less for another portion of the road.

The incident happened after the 66-year-old man picked up the load at Carl Faus Farm. He was supposed to take it to Elizabethtwon, Pennsylvania, where many of those eggs would be placed in an incubator. If you think that, by failing to properly secure the load, the driver killed a whole lot of chickens, this incident is even messier.

According to the report, 11,340 eggs and 2,260 gallons of egg product were ruined. The total damage is of 136,000 eggs, many of which were fertilized and would have grown into chickens.

The semitrailer was traveling uphill and nearing a junction, when the load shifted and fell down, rolling down the hill. The 66-year-old driver didn’t immediately notice and continued driving. The report doesn’t say how far he got before he realized he had lost all his load.

Hegins Township police say that an investigation into the accident is underway, which means the driver could be held liable for the damage if he’s found to have failed to secure the load on the semi. This incident could have had more serious consequences than just a giant omelet on the highway. Luckily, no other drivers were involved.

Drivers of trucks and semis are personally responsible for securing the load they’re carrying, so whenever an accident happens because they fail to do so, they can be held legally and financially responsible for it.
