Edwards: NASCAR Drivers Are Just as Good

Second in the North American Driver of the Year standings this year, NASCAR's Carl Edwards said that stock car racing is not as easy as it might seem for the Formula 1 fans out there. The Sprint Cup & Nationwide Series runner-up made his debut in the Race of Champions last weekend, having the chance to compete against great F1 drivers like Michael Schumacher, retired David Coulthard or new star Sebastian Vettel.

While enthused about his on-track encounter with 7-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher – whom he beat in the ROC – at Wembley Stadium, Edwards suggested all F1 drivers should take a look at how Juan Pablo Montoya is doing in the Sprint Cup standings before taking a shot at the NASCAR drivers. The Colombian turned to NASCAR in 2007 after some pretty successful years in Formula 1 but failed to make a powerful impression in the series so far.

“Montoya is a really cool guy and a great race driver, that’s for sure. I can tell you that from watching him personally and racing with him, he is an amazing talent. But NASCAR is so competitive, I can’t describe it. That’s why I am so grateful someone like Montoya has come to race with us.”

“He has had some success but he has also shown how difficult it can be. It’s just going to take him time - like everyone who comes to NASCAR, even the great ones. I’d give anything for someone like Michael Schumacher to come over and run some races with us so he could give a personal testament about how good our guys are. I feel I’m a great race car driver but there are some days in NASCAR when I’m amazed at how some of those guys do things better than me. It can be a humbling experience,” said Edwards, according to British tabloid The Sun.

The Ford driver also revealed some of his goals for 2009, scoring his maiden win on a road course and becoming new Sprint Cup champion being top priority.

“The thing about finishing second after such a great season is that it’s so motivating. You wanna go prove yourself. I was so bad at road course racing when I started but now I’m getting better and better. Now I really want to win a road course event,” concluded Edwards.
