Edwards Insists Cup Fight is Not Over

Carl Edwards' win at the Atlanta Motor Speedway made him think of the title. Despite recovering only 15 points to championship leader Jimmie Johnson, the Missourian still thinks he has a shot of challenging the reigning champ for the Cup title in the last 3 races of the season. He is now 183 points adrift in the title race, with Johnson only needing to finish 10th or best in the next 3 races to secure a 3rd consecutive Cup title.

“If there's one thing this season has shown me, and all of us I guess, is that every time you think you've figured out who is going to be the guy to beat, it can be turned on its head quickly. 'm telling you, as long as we're within 130 points going to Homestead or whatever, we're still going there to win the championship and it can happen,” argued Edwards after his fulfilling weekend in which he won both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup races.

He also praised Johnson and his crew for doing a phenomenal job in the season so far, admitting that if one had asked him before the season who would lead the Cup standings in the last part of the season, he would have certainly put his money on Johnson.

“It would have been hard for me to believe that there would be one guy that had that big a lead right now. But if I had to pick a guy, I'd say it's Jimmie Johnson. Those guys are really consistent, they do their jobs, but they can have the same luck that we've had, that's for sure,” added Edwards.

Edwards is still in contention for the title in the Nationwide Series also, with his latest win at the Memphis Motorsport Park bringing him closer to championship leader Clint Bowyer. He is now 116 points behind the Emporia-born driver with still 3 races to go in the season. Nevertheless, Edwards insists that fighting two battles at the same time can only help him improve his performances in the final races of 2008.

“In a way I think that it's a nice little escape from each of them. The run yesterday at Memphis was just a blast. I had a really good time and it kind of allowed me to relax a little bit. That feeling of accomplishing something on Saturday can sometimes transfer over. I had a little spring in my step today, so I don't think they take away at all. I think they kind of help one another,” concluded the last weekend's hero.
