The concept used an electric powertrain, located under the vehicle’s floor. This was powered by lithium-ion batteries which offered a 150 km (90 miles) range per charge. The structure of the car was made out of 100 percent recyclable basaltic fiber, a material which is lighter that aluminum, cheaper than carbon and offers similar characteristics to conventional materials. Of course the concept had the same level of novelty when it came to design, as it featured adjustable lighting elements and a customizable dashboard.
For the 2010 Geneva Autoshow, EDAG has prepared a world premiere, a space frame structure which implies joining lightweight materials and semi-finished products with the help of innovative concepts. This is actually a scalable platform destined for small and medium vehicles, weighing around 1,200 kg with the battery pack included. As EDAG says that the battery pack offers a range of 93 miles (150 km), we suspect that this is the same electric component presented last year. The company claims that the new platform involves low investment costs.
The recently developed platform has been integrated into the Light Car. The new concept has been implemented with the support of eight industrial open source partners.
"With the idea of uniting specific technologies provided by specialists in a vehicle that was quite independent of any car manufacturer, it was our intention to create a technology carrier that would show what could be done now and in the future in electric car concepts,” explains EDAG CEO, Jörg Ohlsen. “With this approach, we can also effectively demonstrate the integrator function we have as complete vehicle developers. We achieve the integration of various technologies in a fully functioning vehicle concept that satisfies all legal and customer-specific requirements,"
The company presents the revised Light Car Concept as a proposal coming from an independent electric car designer, destined for a potential low volume production.
