SEAT's first SUV, the Ateca, has not yet entered production. But initial details have become available regarding the all-important price in the UK market. At just £17,990, we think it will compete easily with crossovers like the Nissan Qashqai.
But there's a catch, as the basic Ateca is a front-wheel-drive vehicle powered by a small 1.0 TSI engine with 115 PS and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft). We've driven plenty of big cars with tiny engines and suspect UK buyers will much rather have the 1.4 TSI or one of the economical diesels.

At 4.36 meters (171.6 in) long, the Ateca is only slightly bigger than the Leon it's based on and around 10 cm shorter than a Renault Kadjar. The MQB platform should ensure that it's not too heavy either.

We don't have any pricing details for the other engines, but a 1.6 TDI should cost about £1,000 more and should return up to 66 mpg UK (4.3 l/100km). SEAT are aggressively targeting the UK since their SUV is about as cheap as a normal Leon 5-door hatchback. The new Tiguan isn't available yet, but the older model is much more expensive at £22,975.

The most powerful and expensive engine you'll be able to buy on SEAT's first SUV will consist of a DSG gearbox, 4Drive and the 2.0-liter TDI engine producing 190 PS. All models will benefit from a substantial 510 liters of trunk capacity, which shrinks only by a bit (485 liters) when AWD is optioned.

"The Ateca shows a clear evolution of SEAT’s characteristic design language, and the Ateca also stands for emotion and functionality," says Dr.Matthias Rabe, Executive Vice President for Research and Development.

Being the first all-new SEAT since the Leon, it also benefits from several features that were recently developed by VW Group boffins. For example, it will be available with a wireless phone charging pad, ambient interior lighting that can be configured or a puddle light projected from the bottom of the mirrors.
