Ecclestone Plays Down Purchasing Donington Reports

Once again, Simon Gillett's dreams of seeing Donington Park actually host a Formula One race have taken a strong hit after F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone yesterday revealed he has no plans of reviving the Leicestershire track into becoming the home of the British Grand Prix.

Even if the Donington Ventures LL company that is current leaseholder of the circuit – and are controlled by Gillett – has gone into administration, Gillett still argued that Ecclestone would be ready to return his focus to the Donington track should he find an investor in due time. He even suggested that the circuit could host the 2010 British GP if the investor story would happen.

In addition, some reports suggested that Ecclestone would actually be interested in purchasing the Donington circuit, in order to turn it into the next host of the British race. Backing those rumors was the news that he allegedly bought into the nearby Donington Hall as the first stage of his plan.

But the F1 supremo scrapped all those allegations off the book on Thursday, when insisting that all of it are simply stories.

I have not the slightest interest in buying Donington or running the British grand prix there. What is Donington Hall?” Ecclestone was quoted as saying to the Daily Express.

In addition, the latest reports that emerged on the Silverstone situation suggest that Damon Hill – the president of the British Race Drivers Club, owners of the Northamptonshire track – is very confident of closing an F1 deal with Ecclestone in the upcoming few days.

The hurdle is making sure the deal is mutually beneficial. That's got to be part of it, so we don't end up with another false start,” Hill was quoted as saying to the Evening Standard.
