Ecclestone: I Was an Idiot, I'm Sorry

Bernie Ecclestone finally realized that this is a war he couldn't possible win and apologized for his pro-Hitler remarks in an interview with the Jewish Chronicle. Although he initially insisted that his remarks in the London's Times were blown out of proportion and misinterpreted, the F1 supremo now made it very clear that he is sincerely sorry for what he said in the aforementioned interview.

While praising, at some extent, Hitler's ability to “get things done”, Ecclestone managed to get the attention of all the Jewish groups worldwide. As a consequence of that, his scheduled meeting with Baden-Wurttemberg state premier Gunther Oettinger was canceled.

Sensing that this could go on forever and might actually pose a threat to his position within Formula One, Ecclestone admitted he was an idiot for making those comments and apologized once again to the Jewish community.

I'm just sorry that I was an idiot. I sincerely, genuinely apologize. I never supported Hitler, I don't think there's anybody in this world who could support Hitler and the atrocities they carried out. In the end he got lost so he wasn't a very good dictator. Either he knew what was going on and insisted or he just went along with it – either way he wasn't a dictator,” said Ecclestone.

What I regret is people who have taken this the wrong way and have been offended, I'm really, really sad about because I have done an awful lot for the Jewish community throughout, charities and whatever. Most of my mates are Jewish people; I spoke to two or three very prominent people today, Jewish people. One of them said to me, 'Bernie, you're more Jewish than all of my friends',” added the F1 boss.
