Ecclestone Guarantees F1 Future for Singapore

With the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) pedaling forward in securing the future of historical venues in Formula One, Bernie Ecclestone is sure about one thing. As long as he's in charge of the sport's commercial rights – via the Formula One Management (FOM) – Singapore will remain in the F1 calendar.

Although the Asian circuit was part of Formula One's recent expansion in newer and more exotic markets, everybody seems to agree the Marina Bay venue was and will continue to be a successful destination for the Formula One caravan. The deal between the FOM and the Singapore circuit was initially signed for 5 years, but it will likely be extended furthermore.

We are not going to lose Singapore, that's for sure. As long as Singapore is there, we will be there. The feeling among the teams is good, everybody is happy with Singapore,” Ecclestone was quoted as saying to Today Online.

The 78-year old Brit admitted, however, that he never thought Singapore would have such a huge success in Formula One. Although he looked at the city as more of a stopover on his way to somewhere else, he is now overwhelmed with the opportunities provided by F1's night race. This year's race will actually debut Bernie's latest ides of “F1 show”, the “F1 Rocks” programme.

As I always said it used to be for me a stopover on the way somewhere. It never seemed like a destination. And when you go to Singapore and have a good look, you realize it is a destination, that it is a nice place with nice people,” added the F1 boss.
