Ecclestone Fears He Might Call Off the 2011 Bahrain GP

Bernie Ecclestone expressed concerns about the possibility of losing the first round of the 2011 Formula 1 season, in Bahrain. Following recent reports in the country that anti-government protesters might influence the running of the F1 season opener, the F1 boss admitted the situation is currently in the air.

I have no idea,” said Ecclestone when asked about the prospect of calling off the Bahrain Grand Prix, according to the Daily Telegraph. “It's hard to establish exactly what is going on.”

Additionally, Ecclestone revealed that he tried to contact Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman ibn Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa and find out more on the situation in the country, but he is yet to get a response.

He is a bit busy, as you can imagine, so I don't know yet exactly what is going on,” added Ecclestone.

The danger is obvious isn't it? If these people wanted to make a fuss and get worldwide recognition it would be bloody easy, wouldn't it? You start making a problem on the start grid in Bahrain and it would get worldwide coverage.”

As I say, I'm speaking with the Crown Prince later on. We're watching events closely. We'll rely on what they think the right thing to do is,” he concluded.

Prior to the Formula 1 event in Sakhir, the Bahraini circuit will host a round of the GP2 Asia series, scheduled for later this week.
