Ecclestone Denies New Deadline for Donington

Simon Gillett has just got on Bernie Ecclestone's bad side apparently, after announcing that the Formula One supremo extended the Donington Park's deadline with an extra 2 weeks. The 78-year old Brit today ruled out such a decision, while also announcing that Gilett – Donington's boss – is in breach of contract.

Donington Park signed a multi-year deal with the Formula One Management (FOM) for the hosting of the British Grand Prix and had until Monday to show Ecclestone that they are ready to begin the development of the Leicestershire track in order to meet the standards of F1 racing.

Following Ecclestone's public pessimism of Donington's chances of making the cut in 2010, Gillett announced late yesterday that Ecclestone gave him until the end of next week to come up with the financial backing, via a press release. The information was today denied by the F1 boss. According to him, it seems Gillett slightly misinterpreted his latest message.

We haven't decided to give Gillett another deadline at all. We have informed him he is in breach of contract. The contract which we have gives him 14 days to remedy the breach. Most business contracts are like that. People interpret things the way they want to interpret them. It would be hard if you were standing in a court today arguing what he said was wrong,” said Ecclestone in an interview with Telegraph Sport.

He has been given, like the contract says, another two weeks to remedy the breach. No deadline has changed,” added the F1 official, who also revealed that Donington will lose their license if Gillett won't rectify the breach in 2 weeks time.

I've been thinking he's going to come through all the way along because he's sort of led me to believe it's all OK. But I have no reason to discuss anything with him. He's either going to remedy the breach or he isn't. If he isn't then that's the end of the story. If he is then we're going to have to make sure that he does all the other things that the contract provides for,” added Bernie.
