Ecclestone Contemplates F1 Quit

Bernie Ecclestone's latest comments in a recent interview with the Sunday Times hint at potential F1 retirement for the 80-year old Englishman. We know that's hard to believe, but considering the fact that Ecclestone has seldom made this kind of threats, whenever he pronounces the word “pension”, the world is willing to listen.

Some rumors prior to Easter have suggested that magnate Rupert Murdoch – ranked 117th wealthiest person in the world and 13th most powerful person in the world according to a 2010 Forbes classification – is planning to take over the world of Formula 1, alongside Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim.

And although dismissing those rumors from the get go last week, Ecclestone admitted in a recent interview with the aforementioned publication that should F1 change ownership, he'll have to reconsider his position as chief executive of the sport.

I'm old enough to get a pension, so I don't have to get a job,” admitted Ecclestone, who has been at the helm of the Great Circus for more than 3 decades. “I'd have to be sure the people (who own F1) are people I would like to work with and whether they would want to work with me,” he added.

Until those rumors will be confirmed however, Ecclestone has bigger fish to fry for the time being, as he is currently linked with a top extortion scandal regarding the sale of the commercial rights from a German bank to F1's current owner CVC some 5 years back.

While a police investigation is still ongoing in Germany, the CVC has conducted an internal inquiry of their own, which presumably cleared the Englishman of any wrongdoing.
