Ecclestone Considers Montreal, New York for F1 Calendar

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone admitted he is thinking more and more at reinstalling the North American continent on the Formula 1 calendar. Following immense pressure from all car makers inside the sport to return to what is known as world's most favorable market, Ecclestone said Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and/or New York could prove possible destinations for the F1 caravan in 2010.

While insisting the potential return of Formula 1 in North America also depends on the teams' will to accept the addition of extra events to the already existing 17 races on schedule, the 78-year old Englishman revealed there are only two potential sites to be taken into consideration when discussing such a move.

The first choice would be Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, as Bernie reckoned the Canadian government is making all the necessary efforts to bring Formula 1 back to Montreal. Also, the high interest of Canadian fans in F1 racing is an aspect to be looked upon by the F1 boss.

“We are trying to get that back on again. The government is interested,” said Ecclestone in an interview for Motor Sport magazine. Nevertheless, Bernie is also considering the USA for joining the F1 calendar, mostly because of the high interest generated by the formation of the USF1 team within the American fans.

While making it public that The Brickyard – Indianapolis Motor Speedway – will never become an option for Formula 1 in the near future, Ecclestone argued New York would be the most financially-suitable place for hosting a Grand Prix.

“It is the one place where someone could make a business out of it. Apart from Indianapolis ... there is nowhere in America we could go to and hold our head up and say 'this is comparable to other circuits we are building around the world,” added the Englishman.
