In what was probably the strangest traffic stop for one (arguably handsome) police officer with the Derbyshire PD, England, one driver was driving around with a deformed, bubbly tire.
Not only was he driving around like that, but he was actually doing school runs. A tweet from the PD says the officer pulled the driver over after a he’d dropped his kid(s) off to school. Talk about reckless driving.
“Good Spot Officer!” TeamPPODerby writes on the official Twitter page, in a caption to photos of the badly damaged tire. “Whilst on patrol PPO 9712 witnessed this car on a school run. When it was safe to do so 9712 advised that the car came off the road and into a garage close by. New tire now fitted. Perhaps his actions saved this driver from a costly repair – or worse!”
From what we can gather, the driver wasn’t sanctioned, so it was a double win that the eagle-eyed cop spotted him in traffic and pulled him over. As you can see from the photos included with the tweet below, of the 13 bubbles on the right-hand tire, many at least 3 look ready to pop.
The PD doesn’t say what caused this kind of damage to the tire, but generally, this tends to happen when there’s physical damage: think potholes, hitting curbs or railroad crossings. The inner liner becomes damaged or perforated, allowing air to become trapped in the sidewall. In this particular case, it looks as if the bubbles are large enough to be felt when the car is in motion, so this begs the question of how the driver was able to ignore the problem.
More importantly, should any one of those bubbles popped while the car was moving, the driver could have easily lost control of the vehicle and crashed – especially if he was traveling at considerable speed. Seeing how he had kids with him in the car, the worst-case scenario situation becomes even more grim.
So yes, great save, Mr. handsome police officer.
