Some of our Australian readers and most other residents of countries where they drive on the wrong side of the road might be interested to know that Car Advice has recently tested the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Convertible facelift in various engine-specification versions.
No matter the engine under the hood, none of the “down under” versions of the facelifted models are exempt from the Australian Luxury Car Tax, which is a staggering 33%.
In other words, our first jaw-dropping moment in the review was when we read about the base-range E 200 Coupe starting price of almost 80,000 AUS Dollars.
The reviewer praised both of the models' bold styling, and the good practicality for a car with no rear doors. The all-new twin-turbocharged V6 was noted for its pretty good fuel economy and performance, though they found the exhaust note to bee a little too quiet, especially compared to the now defunct in Australia top model, the 5.5-liter V8 from the E 500 Coupe and Cabriolet.
Both the facelift E- Coupe and Convertible were berated for the “too-BMW-ish” ride, which seems a bit too sporty for what you would expect from a Mercedes-Benz luxurious grand tourer.
All in all, the two-door E-Class twins seem to look adequately stylish, luxurious and drive well enough for most Aussie customers, so Car Advice Australia ends the review on a pretty positive note, which you can read in full right here.
