It's been a while since we last brought you a story featuring the bright color of love and all things girly. We wouldn't want to find our female readership feeling alienated, so we "traveled" to the Netherlands for something special. In the town of Wijchen, motorists awoke to "the pink miracle" a day ago, as some of the traffic islands have been painted pink overnight.
Now, what you need to understand is that this is a serious, traditional town with a small population of around 35,000 people. It's not a busy corner of Amsterdam, where crazy things happen all the time. Just to give you an idea, we found a local report from the same place in which officials are questioned about the grass sticking out through cobblestones and the dangers it poses to small children.
The reason for the bright color show has nothing to do with breast cancer or being cute. Traffic islands are normally a reddish-brown color, but the local official in charge of road maintenance simply ordered the wrong color number. Why didn't the workers figure out something was wrong? We don't know, but they went ahead and painted everything pink, much to the surprise of motorists.
The city said in a statement that it will have the traffic islands re-painted as soon as possible. But members of the public demanded they be left as they are. Of course, this being the Holland, Wijchen City Council agreed and has reportedly also commissioned a group of artist to work their magic in the hope of raising road safety awareness.
