Ducati Scrambler Spied Despite Security Measures

Ducati has showed its all-new Scrambler machine to some of the attendants of the World Ducati Week in Misano recently, and despite the high-security measures which have been taken, someone was able to take a photo of the new bike.

The Scrambler was showcased in the same yellow metal container Ducati used to show it to its employees weeks ago, and guards made sure no visitor would gain access with a camera phone, PDA or any other similar imaging device. People have been allowed inside the container in groups of eight or less, for making checking for the forbidden gadgets easier, but this didn’t cut it. Good efforts, we’d say, but it looks like the guards’ skills were not good enough for a guy who managed to take a quick photo of the Scrambler and uploaded it on an unofficial Ducati Facebook page.

While previous footage also showed a red livery, the new spy shot introduces an yellow and black color scheme with brushed aluminium accents. Given the stealth nature of the entire affair, the spy shot only reveals the fuel tank, engine and a fraction of the front end and frame. The tank harks back to the 60’s design and will definitely be a key element in deciding to buy or to avoid buying this bike. I’ve seen a lot of better old-school bikes and the Scrambler looks less and less appealing to us, even though I know there will be a lot of guys who will be thrilled by its looks. Still, the bare aluminium patch on the fuel tank looks very cool and has a very English air about it.

Even though no official info on the engine was provided, it looks like the best guesses are the older Monster air-cooled L-twins, the 696 or the 796 ones. Italian sources mention the latter as the actual lump inside the Scrambler, and this could mean 87 horsepower and 78 Nm (58 lb-ft) from the 803cc power unit, and this would make the Scrambler a very fun machine, especially with a re-geared transmission with lower revs needed for the peak torque and power figures.

Still, judging by the shape of the exhaust shape, I’d still say it looks disturbingly close to the design of the Monster 821… so maybe someone at Ducati figured out that blending in modern elements with the retro attire was a good idea. I’d say it was, anyway, even though the spy video shows other headers. The fall brings the official launch of the Scrambler, but something tells me that we’re going to see more spy shots soon.
