Ducati is on its way to attract entry-level riders with something else than the Scrambler. It lacked an accessible naked sportster, and now it has one - the company just introduced the all-new 2017 Monster 797 at EICMA in Milan, Italy.
Built around the 803 cc air-cooled engine used by the Scrambler, the new 797 tips the scales at 192.7 kg (425 lb) and develops 75 horsepower. No word about the torque, but it should be enough for darting across the city or riding the backroads while leaving most cars in dust.
The front suspension is an upside down 43 mm Kayaba fork while the rear gets a Sachs shock with adjustable preload and rebound. Stopping power is provided by the same setup of the bigger Monster 821, meaning it has Brembo M4.32 calipers squeezing on 320 mm discs up front and a 245 mm one at the rear.
There is a difference, however, with the front master cylinder not being radially mounted while the rear caliper uses a single-piston construction, instead of the two-pot version on the 821.
That nice trellis frame is a one-piece structure and is not a structural unit as seen on the Monster 821 or 1200. The dual-sided swingarm copies on the one found on the 2008 Monster 696, probably for cost reductions.
Comparing it to the 821, the new 797 has a bit less rake and trail while offering a shorter wheelbase. Just perfect for shorter riders. Oh, yeah, seat height in standard form measures 805 mm (31.7 inch). And I say ‘standard form’ because it can be adjusted, and it can go as low as 785 mm (30.9 inch).
Electronic gizmos are limited to ABS and an LCD along with an APTC slipper clutch for easier riding. The Monster 797 will be available in two shades - Ducati Red ($9,295) and Stark White Silk ($9,395).
