Ducati Recalls Diavel and Multistrada 1200 in Canada

Ducati motorcycles have long been regarded as masterpieces of engineering and design, but this doesn’t mean they are also flawless. As any piece of machinery, they too are poised to failure. Transport Canada has issued a recall for two of the newest additions to the Ducati line-up: the Diavel and the Multistrada 1200.

According to Transport Canada, certain 2011 Ducati Diavel and 2010-2011 Ducati Multistrada 1200 models have been recalled because of a problem with the electronic steering lock. On some units, the steering lock may fail to disengage when starting the engine. Riders may potentially start to ride without being able to steer.

The Canadian recall reportedly affects 192 units. Local dealers are expected to fix the problem free of charge, through a software update to the Hands Free Control Unit on affected motorcycles.

So far, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet released notice of a recall, but Ducati North America is expected to announce a recall campaign for the U.S. shortly.

However, the North American division of Ducati announced back in January it has decided to recall some 1,196 Multistrada 1200S motorcycles manufactured in 2010 due to potential fuel system malfunctions (Electronic Control Unit ECU).

Specifically, Ducati says the Multistrada 1200 S could stall during downshifting or when the clutch is disengaged while the engine is at idle. The direct consequence of such a problem is that engine stalling could increase the risk of a crash.

While the Diavel comes as a blend between a naked street bike (as it is light and agile), a cruiser (imposing and comfortable) and a sports bike (powerful, offering a high level of performance), the Multistrada 1200 is able to offer four different riding modes including Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro.
