During this year’s Pikes Peak Hill Climb, one of the competition’s most notorious motorcycle riders, Carlin Dunne, was killed in a crash that occurred just a quarter-mile away from the finish line. As he did many times before, he was riding a Ducati.
The four-times champion of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb competition is honored this month by the Italian bike builder with one of its limited edition Panigale V4 25 Anniversario 916.
The bike is number 5 in a production run of just 500, and has been chosen to honor Dunne’s race number. It was made available on eBay on Thursday, where it will sell for the highest amount when the auction ends on September 15.
The Panigale will sell complete with a leather racing suit worn by Ducati World Superbike pilot Chaz Davies during the World Superbike WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca back in June.
There is only one bid for the bike at the moment of this writing, valued at $42,500. This is precisely the starting price for the Panigale V4 25 Anniversario 916 on Ducati’s website.
All the proceeds from the sale will go to the Carlin Dunne Foundation, an organization recently set up to help injured extreme sport athletes.
The Panigale V4 25 Anniversario 916 is based on the mechanics of the Panigale V4 S. It uses a 1,103 cc Desmosedici Stradale engine that can deliver 214 hp. The bike’s road behavior is controlled by the Bosch 6-axis inertial platform.
Öhlins shock absorbers and steering dampers ensure a smooth ride, while a Brembo braking system is there to provide the stopping power.
The bike’s livery is inspired by the 996 SBK that won the Superbike Championship in 1999, with Ducati Red graphics. It rides on Marchesini Racing wheels.
The bike now selling on eBay for the Carlin Dunne foundation has no complementary modifications, aside for the addition of Davies’ racing suit, valued at $3,000.
