That fact that Dainese was making the best-performing motorcycle rider airbag is no news, and the first specific tests have confirmed the leading position, too. Still, it’s now time for Ducati to hit the spotlight with their all-new wirelessly-integrated rider airbag… a world premiere, too.
The two Italian manufacturers worked together and have managed to deliver a rider airbag solution which is less of a burden than the aero lump motorcycle racers wear on their backs. Ducati has integrated the D-Air technology in their Multistrada bike, now transformed into the Multistrada D-Air.

A complex array of intelligent sensors was added to the Multistrada, and hooked to the existing electronics. As the sensors feed constant streams of data to the bike’s computer, a wide range of riding aspects are being monitored permanently. The smart analysis patterns can tell whether the bike and the persons riding it are likely to be involved in an accident and the computers sends a wireless command to the airbag jackets, deploying them just before the crash, if the circumstances of a specific scenario are met.

Dainese’s D-Air can fully inflate the air bladders in 45 milliseconds, being the fastest rider airbag system currently in production. Ducati’s jackets for the rider and passenger have been also developed together with Dainese, and are lighter than other D-Air systems, thanks to having the sensors mounted bike-side.

The Ducati Multistrada D-Air is also equipped with an additional warning lights module providing the rider with status info on the system and the airbags. The bike will be introduced on May 15 and will become available in European Ducati dealerships from May 2015.
