Even though they may have developed with the help of oil resources, one of the ways the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates wants to stand out is by showing they care for the latest technologies on the market. The sustainable infrastructure is part of that, of course. After adding the first BMW i8 to their impressive Police car fleet, the country’s authorities are now considering incentives for future EV buyers.
By the 1960s, the city’s economy was based on revenues from trade and, as opposed to what most believe, to a smaller extent oil exploration concessions. When the resources were discovered in 1966, revenue started to flow. Dubai’s oil revenue helped accelerate the early development, of course, but its reserves are limited, and production levels are low. In fact, today, less than 5% of the emirate’s revenue comes from oil.

Encouraging car buyers to look towards cleaner vehicles is part of the smart city initiative. According to Gulf News, the town’s official are looking at various options to make electric cars more attractive to motorists.

The Executive Council of Dubai is studying various proposals to encourage people to use eco-friendly autos. Having the infrastructure ready for charging the vehicles is a first step in this direction. Various other things are being looked at like reducing the customs duty or subsidizing the cost for buyers,” said Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa). The announcement was made after the inauguration of the first public EV charging station at Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO).

Considering a number of supercars the streets of the opulent city hosts, we’re wondering if anybody will be interesting in switching to a cleaner vehicle. On the other hand, some EVs are already fast enough to match the petrol-powered sportscars, so it may work.
