Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) announced today it has reached a tentative agreement with the UAW, representing workers from Mount Holly, Gastonia and Cleveland plants, on the new employee contracts.
The deal, which, if approved, will replace the one which expired on April 9, covers 5,700 workers at the aforementioned facilities. The vote on the new contract is scheduled to take place on April 17 and 18.
"These were by no means easy negotiations; like so many industries, the heavy trucks business has had some setbacks because of the economy,” UAW heavy trucks department vice president General Holiefieldw was quoted as saying by just-auto.com.
“But our team tackled the issues realistically and came away with agreements that we can confidently take to the membership for ratification.”
Mount Holly assembles medium-duty Freightliner trucks and is the smallest of the three units, employing 140. The Gastonia Components and Logistics Plant has on its payroll 671, while the Cleveland facility, used to build heavy-duty trucks, employs 835.
“These tentative agreements are another victory in securing jobs for the membership,” UAW Region 8 director Gary Casteel added.
“We were able to obtain a number of items we sought from these negotiations, particularly job security during this economic downturn.”
As usual, the terms of the deal will not be made public until the casting on the vote later this month. However, there are big chances the new contract is approved, as DTNA was somehow safeguarded from the economic storm of last year and didn't need to resort to unpopular measures.
