Florida man is here to prove that age doesn’t bring wisdom. If anything, it can bring more propensity for trouble, which is directly proportional to the amount of alcohol ingested.
So, a 59-year-old man from Florida found himself at a Walmart store in St. Petersburg, drove around for a bit in one of those “electric courtesy carts” and then took off with it. Because these motorized shopping carts usually cost upwards of $1,500, stealing them classifies as a felony. And staff will be more inclined to keep an eye on you if you’re using one.
Also notable is the fact that these scooters rarely go faster than 2 miles per hour, so stealing them is more trouble than it’s worth. Of course, John Davis didn’t stop to think of that and that’s probably because he was very drunk.
Walmart employees called the police and the officers tracked Davis down about 1 mile farther down the road, at a gas station, The Smoking Gun reports, citing the police affidavit. The battery on the motorized vehicle had run out and Davis thought he’d plug the cart into whatever outlet he could find at the gas station and continue on his (undoubtedly merry) way. The Smoking Gun says he “was attempting to recharge the cart via a ‘gas station electrical outlet’.”
Davis admitted to the officer to having stolen the cart and was arrested and charged with felony grand theft. And here’s perhaps the strangest part: the dude lives 20 miles from the Walmart he stole the cart from, and he went into the opposite direction after taking it.
Sadly, the police report doesn’t say how he got to the Walmart in the first place or where he was driving in the motorized shopping cart at past 10 o’clock at night. But perhaps this mention in the affidavit explains it best: “The defendant was intoxicated.”
