A warning for all potential drunk drivers who might be tempted to try and escape the long arm of the law at the wheel: if you’re too drunk to see the road, your chances of driving to freedom are slim to none.
One driver from San Diego, California, learned this lesson the hard way, NBC San Diego reports. His name is Cristian Reinoso, he’s 24 years old, and he’s now facing serious charges like assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and hit and run causing injury. In addition to the comparatively light DUI charge, of course.

Deputies for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department were answering a call about a possible drunk driver in a parking lot. They got to the scene and went over to the car, where they found Reinoso, displaying the classical signs of intoxication.

He identified himself and seemed to cooperate at first, the media outlet notes. Then, he backed his car into the police cruiser twice and fled the scene. Sadly (for him), he didn’t get too far and it was probably because he was too drunk.

“Reinoso then fled the scene in his vehicle, striking a fence, and a parked car. He then failed to stop for a red light at an intersection and collided with another vehicle causing major damage to both, deputies said,” NBC reports.

The impact with the second, moving vehicle was so powerful that Reinoso’s car flipped. He still wasn’t ready to give up the fight, so he got out of the car and ran into a nearby apartment complex, where the deputies eventually apprehended him.

The other driver involved in the collisions suffered minor injuries, but Reinoso had to be taken to the hospital to receive treatment for him. The officers weren’t hurt, as they weren’t in the patrol car when Reinoso backed into it.
