Since it’s the season and everything, there’s tree decorating and then there’s… tree decorating. A young man from the UK did the latter, managing to leave his car hanging from a tree.
Yes, he was driving drunk and yes, there was speeding involved. The accident took place in a rural area outside Shrewsbury, UK, after the drunk driver crashed into a telephone pole. From there, the car was sent flying through the air and it ended up hanging from a tree, bottoms up.
The driver wasn’t injured, but the woman riding with him in the passenger seat had to be taken to the hospital to receive treatment for her injuries. As far as we can tell, no one else was hurt, but we imagine the dude’s wallet will also be taking a beating when he realizes his car is, most likely, totaled.
Police arrived on the scene and conducted a roadside breathalyzer test, which he failed. He’s been taken into custody and charged with driving while intoxicated, and is also being turned into an example of reckless driving on social media.
“It’s not modern art and you don’t need to rotate your phone. This is the result of drink driving. Young male driver arrested, female passenger in hospital. It’s simple - if you’re driving, stay off the booze!” Station Commander James Bainbridge writes on Twitter, in a caption to the photo of the car hanging upside down from the tree.
Reckless driving in general, and drunk driving in particular, remains the number one cause of accidents on the road, so bear that in mind if you’re planning on having a drink this holiday season. Leave the car at home and hitch a ride with a non-drinking friend / Uber / public transport. Stay safe and, preferably, with your car on the road and not hanging from trees.
