Driving Instructor Crushed Under Lorry by his Student

Even if at first sight you wouldn't have imagined that, being a driving instructor is a very dangerous profession. Not to mention the stupid accidents that happen all the time...

In the case of the driving instructor Alan Underwood, age 48, a stupid accident during the lessons put an end to his teaching. A recent article on The Daily Mail tells the unfortunate story of the driving instructor who was crushed to death under an 18-ton lorry by a female-learner while practicing an emergency stop.

Apparently, Alan Underwood was standing in front of the vehicle explaining to his student Corinne Radburn how to apply an emergency stop. But Radburn somehow got her foot blocked between the brake and accelerator and accidentally drove into him. The tragic accident happened on March 17 last year at the Crick Truckstop car park near Northampton. The instructor's upper body didn't go under the lorry but his legs were trapped. He was taken to Coventry University Hospital but died of multiple injuries later that day.

Surprisingly, Dawn Underwood, the wife of the driving instructor, does not blame the learner for the tragedy and doesn't intend to sue her.

“I cannot imagine what she is going through. I wouldn't like to see her prosecuted. I just want to know why Alan did what he did,” Mr Underwood's widow confessed.

The killer-by-mistake explained she had told Mr Underwood that she did not feel happy about performing the emergency stop. “The situation made me feel uncomfortable,” she told the inquest.

Richard Winterlich, from Rugby, was a fellow student witnessed the terrible scene that day. He can't say what exactly happened with the lorry-driver but claimed he did not see the brake lights go on. Of course, he didn't because, obviously, there wasn't any braking.

Normally, we would have refrained form comments regarding this kind of accidents, but we do think Mrs Underwood is just too kind with learner Corinne Radburn. There will be no logical excuse not to press the brake when you truly have to stop... irrespective of the means (feet, hands etc) that you use.
