While we’re glad drifting has finally gathered enough attention for people to consider it a sport, it’s still difficult for sliding events to reach the popularity they deserve. Finding new ways of luring the public is hard, but we might have come across the perfect method to achieve this.
How about setting your drift car on fire while working to achieve those extreme slip angles? Since motorsport machines are usually powered by gasoline, such a plan could easily backfire - pun intended - but you can ignore it all and watch the footage below, which offers us a fiery drifting spectacle.

However, before you hit that “play” button, there’s something you need to know. The video shows us a Hyundai Genesis Coupe drift car doing its thing, with flames emerging from the back of the car all of a sudden.

The driver acts as if nothing has happened and keeps working the Genesis Coupe through the bends. The drifter does stop eventually, with the emergency vehicles at the track rushing to do their job.

What actually happened

The drift team that handles this Hyundai have a simple explanation for the flaming episode, telling us they “accidentally overfilled our fuel cell causing some fuel to splash out once we ran it and when the car backfired it lit up the rear end.

Fortunately, both the driver and the car managed to walk/drive away from the incident. Right now, you might be wondering how such an extreme moment could leave the car unaffected.

Sure, the Hyundai might need a few small touches, but no vital component of the machine has been affected in the incident. As the team once again explains, the rear bumper needs to be replaced, while a few panels require a respray. A small price to pay for the glory of the world wide web.
