Are there any Dragon Ball Z fans around? Then you certainly know who Gohan, Krillin, Dende, and Porunga are and how important they are in the Dragon Ball universe. But have you ever asked yourself what kind of car would the three amigos want if the super-powered martial artists couldn’t fly or leap great instances? Cue the Ford Focus.
Titled “The Ultimate Wish Is Granted,” the commercial uses remastered footage from the classic Dragon Ball Z television series. In the case of the script and dialogue, those are provided by FUNimation, an American anime licensing company based in Texas.

FUNimation’s most popular property is Dragon Ball Z, which ran from 1998 to 2003 on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block. If FUNimation hadn't licensed Dragon Ball Z in the United States (and South America), the popular anime series would never have caught on American soil. At the beginning of the commercial, Gohan, Krillin, and Dende summon the wish-granting dragon Porunga on the fictional planet of Namek.

Because the boys have gathered all seven Namekian Dragon Balls, Porunga is much obliged to grant them three wishes, asking the boys what they want. With plenty of excitement in his voice, Krillin first asks for a car equipped with a Sony sound system. After that, Krillin says that he wants a second car with a rear-view parking camera. The dragon Porunga steps in at this point, suggesting to Krillin a single vehicle with both features as he didn’t want the boys to squander their wishes.

But Krillin cuts Porunga off, asking for a third car with impressive highway gas mileage. This is where Porunga’s patience reaches its limits. Exasperated, the dragon says that he’ll bundle their wishes together into one car: the 2016 model year Ford Focus. With that, Porunga disappears, and the viewers are reminded to conserve their wishes.

Now, if you’ll excuse us, the autoevolution team is off to draft a letter to Mazda North American Operations to find out if anyone in its marketing team is a fan or Cowboy Bebop or Neon Genesis Evangelion.
