There’s no doubt Kelly Harvey is a sore man today, but he also probably knows he’s an extremely lucky man. At the Colorado Street Outlaws drag racing event held at the Pikes Peak International Raceway, Harvey was partially ejected from his 1955 Chevrolet after his car rolled several times, and it was all caught on video.
Right off the line, the Camaro he was racing gets a little squirrely, but halfway down the track it swerves enough that Harvey had to react. This steering correction caused the beautiful ’55 Chevy to lose control before starting to roll right at the finish line. After the third roll, you can see Harvey’s legs start to poke through where the windshield once was, and by the end of the fourth roll when the car came to rest on its tires, his entire lower body was outside of the vehicle.
Amazingly, he was able to crawl back into the car, open the door and walk away from the accident – albeit a little wobbly, understandably. After the crash, Harvey said that his seat belts weren’t properly mounted to the car, and they pulled right through the floor boards. It’s not clear whether his car had a racing harness (or a roll cage) or if he was just using a lap belt. Fortunately, he was wearing a helmet, which no doubt saved his life, and rescue workers were on the scene within seconds.
“PPIR sets standards for all its events to keep drivers, crew and spectators safe. However, it is the responsibility of the car owner, driver and crews to be sure their vehicles are prepared to take to the track. We’re glad there were no serious injuries,” said PPIR general manager Bob Boileau.
