Usually, drag races between tuned cars and stock ones are not fair. That depends on a variety of factors, though, the most important one being just how hardcore the modifications were. What we have here though, is a rather interesting duel between an E63 M6 against an F06 M6 Gran Coupe.
As stock, the E63 came with a legendary engine, one developed back in the days when BMW was still involved in Formula 1 and knew how to get the revs up. To get an idea, the S85 5-liter V10 plant used to make 507 HP and 520 Nm (385 lb-ft) of torque as standard, revving up to an astonishing redline of 8,250 RPM.
That being said, the cars that used it were ballistic, reaching speeds that were rather unfathomable for that day and age. And the sound... Oh God, the sound was brilliant!
The car featured in the drag race below, however, is not stock. According to the original poster of the video, it had its ECU flashed and the exhaust changed to offer more power. However, since this is a naturally aspirated engine, not much can be changed.
It’s not the case of the F06 M6 Gran Coupe that’s going up against it. That’s because the modern version has a force fed 4.4-liter V8 that makes 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque. Tuners, however, have apparently developed kits for the S63 engine that can be easily taken over 600 HP. Fortunately for the older M6, it’s not the case here.
So, could a slightly tuned (we’re guessing around 550 HP) E63 keep up with its modern, four-door coupe brother? Well, there’s only one way to find out, right?
To be honest, we didn’t think that the atmospheric engine could keep up so well with the turbo one. However, despite the sudden pull the Gran Coupe showed at the beginning, things started to even out once they reached in the 200 km/h (124 mph) territory.
