This video might very well be used to define an unfair drag race. Here we have two completely different cars going at it, with nothing basically putting them in the same league.

Most of the time, when people drag race they do it in organized sessions, making sure you don’t get to race your Golf against a Lamborghini. To do so, cars are split into categories, either by engine capacity or by the amount of power they have. On extreme cases, they might even consider body style a criteria.

In this video, though, nothing relates the two apart from the ever-burning rivalry between the brands: BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Actually, on a second thought, this isn’t even a proper BMW but rather an Alpina.

The contenders

The ones going at it here are an Alpina B5 Touring (that admittedly uses an E61 5 Series chassis) and a Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG. Going through the specs, we’ll immediately see why they really shouldn’t have raced.

The Alpina uses a 4.4-liter V8 engine fitted with a supercharger that forces it to make 500 BHP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. That’s then hooked up to a reinforced 6-speed automatic gearbox that sends the power to the rear wheels alone. Admittedly, the Alpina is a lot heavier than the Merc but the difference in power is stunning.

The Benz has a 2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine under the bonnet making 360 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque thanks to the engineering done by AMG. It’s also lighter, uses a better dual-clutch gearbox and sends its power to all four corners of the car.

Now, if the race would’ve been done with a standing start, things might’ve been different but in these conditions, the outcome of the race is not surprising.
