Drag Race: Jaguar F-Type R AWD Against a Nissan GT-R – Video

Now that Jaguar lets you buy its flagship F-Type R model with all-wheel drive, it was only a matter of time until people started drag racing it. With the previous version, the one that only could be had with rear-wheel drive, you’d be out of luck trying to drag race.

That’s because 550 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque for the rear wheels with no launch control usually translate into a lot of smoke but not a lot of ground covered. Sure, there are cars out there that do a good job of keeping that kind of power under control with just RWD to rely on but not the Jaguar.

With all-wheel drive, things definitely changed for the better. Could it be enough to take on the Godzilla, though? Yes, I’m talking about the Nissan GT-R.

The Japanese is known around the world for its incredible launch control feature that will leave most supercars in the dust even though it doesn’t have incredible amounts of power at its disposal to do so.

As a matter of fact, the power levels are dangerously close, even though unlike the Jaguar’s 5-liter supercharged V8, the GT-R uses a 3.8-liter V6 with turbos attached to it.

On paper, the Nissan would do the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) run in 2.8 seconds while the F-Type would need 4.1 seconds. Yes, that’s a big difference but even so, the guys from Autocar hoped that the extra torque of the Jaguar would cut some of that time difference. Well, let’s see what happened, shall we?
