The BMW M5 and M6 Gran Coupe models represent the paradox of the Motorsport division these days. That’s because even though the latter is the heavier model (by a small margin) it’s also the quicker choice.
In standard guises, the two are basically similar in almost all matters. Some even hurried to call the Gran Coupe simply a 6 Series Sedan and they wouldn’t be far off from the truth.

The similarities go beneath the skin as well as the engine powering the monsters is exactly the same on both: the S63B44Tu 4.4-liter V8 with twin-turbocharging making 560 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque.

With it, the heavier M6 can go up to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.2 seconds while the M5 is rated at 4.3 seconds. How is that possible? It doesn’t even matter, to be completely honest and that’s because the difference is so small that you probably won’t even notice it in real life. And that’s if you get the launch control sequence to work, which has proved to be quite the chore in the past for some drivers.

Getting back to the matter at hand here, we are looking at a rather unusual pair. That’s because the drag race you’re about to see is not between stock cars. The M5 is bringing a different ECU map to the table, one that was meddled with by the guys from Burger Motorsports.

On top of that, it also has an AFE intake and had the rear muffler removed for better airflow and an improved sound. On the other hand, the M6 Gran Coupe is rather stock but had the M Driver’s Package installed which raised the limited top speed to 305 km/h (189 mph).

Since the M5 has around 50 HP and 120 Nm (88.5 lb-ft) of torque extra, it should be a no brainer, right? But how much of a difference do those numbers make? Check out the video to find out.
