As we reported earlier, 12-times trial world champion Dougie Lampkin was getting ready to wheelie the entire length of the Isle of Man TT course on a modified bike. And yes, he did it this weekend, getting in the record books as the first man to ever ride the route on one wheel.
Isle of Man’s capricious weather conditions meant Dougie had to postpone his run, and set off down Bray Hill Sunday evening at around 5 pm to tackle the 37.73 miles mountain course with the front wheel of his bike up in the air.

“My legs are gone. It was so windy on the mountain... I could feel the brakes worming up, I was just everywhere. I couldn’t wait for it to be over,” an exhausted Dougie told Redbull TV at the finishline. “From the beginning it was incredible. I picked over at the start, just notching through to top gear where I wanted to be, sort of hesitated a little bit, nearly went down before the start line and then... It took a while to sort it out... I knew I was going to fast.”

His attempt was also more thrilling as traffic on the route wasn’t closed for the event. He had a support car up ahead to open up his path, but oncoming traffic was still swooshing by on the lane to his right. It doesn’t sound that bad, but when you are trying to break a record that big, and you have to concentrate for that long, this could set your mind off the track.

Lampkin used a special Vertigo Ice Hell 300 trial bike for this stunt. The small bike got extra foot pegs on the rear wheel’s axle, a second rear brake and even an electric motor in the front wheel to keep it spinning and aid with overall balance at slow speeds.

If you missed the run, you can watch it here as Redbull TV has everything on tape.
