Doug DeMuro Says the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E “Drives Better than the Model Y”

Following the Ranger EV and Focus Electric, Ford couldn’t afford to watch Tesla’s commercial success from the sideline. Better late than never, the Blue Oval went all-in with the 2021 model year Mustang Mach-E.

The question is, does it have what it takes to challenge the Model Y? According to Doug DeMuro, it certainly does on paper and in the real world.

At an autocross event organized by the Blue Oval, the automotive vlogger found the Mustang Mach-E “quite impressive” in terms of handling. He also mentions that “it drives better than the Model Y,” which is the highest praise possible for an electric SUV that didn’t start off with a dedicated platform.

Built in Mexico for the entire world, the compact SUV rides on the Global Electrified 1 vehicle architecture. In other words, the basic structure has been adapted from the Escape and Bronco Sport crossovers. DeMuro is most impressed by how the Mustang Mach-E corners, highlighting that “it’s better than the Tesla Model Y. It feels, honestly, a little like a sports car.”

As you can tell from the design of the two-tone alloy wheels, Doug is driving the Premium trim level with pretty much all the bells and whistles. The “Extended Range Battery – AWD” option, for example, adds $7,700 to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $47,000 for the Premium.

Even though I’m not a big fan of the Mach-E because Ford had the audacity to call it a Mustang, I can’t deny that it’s a very good effort from a legacy automaker against Tesla and the Model Y. The specification driven by DeMuro features up to 270 miles (434 km) of range from an 88-kWh battery pack, and the dual-motor setup promises 346 horsepower or 351 PS for the European version. Zero to 60 mph (96 kph) isn’t too shabby either at 4.8 seconds.

On that note, the Dougscore puts the Ford Mustang Mach-E electric crossover behind the Model Y Performance and Model 3 Performance at 65 points versus 68 and 67 points. The Model X is listed with 64 points, and the Model 3 without the go-faster upgrades trails behind with 59 points.
