Double Diffuser Again Controversial after Ferrari, McLaren Car Launches

Ferrari and McLaren Mercedes have barely presented their 2010 single-seaters these days and already the world of Formula One seems at war. The thing all commotion revolves around is the double diffuser. Yes, you got it right, the same F1 car component that caused a chaotic and controversial first half of the season back in 2009.

Back then, it was Brawn GP that introduced the concept in Formula One, leading to immense criticism and ultimately a contestation from the majority of the teams regarding its legality. The ruling body then rejected the teams' appeal, turning the BGP01 into a title-winner from the very beginning of the 2009 campaign.

Now, according to Ferrari's technical director and designer of the F10 Aldo Costa, several teams have designed their 2010 challengers on the limit of the diffuser regulations. Although no obvious suggestion was made towards McLaren, the Woking based team's engineering director Paddy Lowe felt obliged to answer the potential allegations.

This is the first car in which we have had a clean sheet of paper to really exploit the interpretation (of diffusers) that was developed last year for a design of floors. You will see we have produced a fairly extreme incarnation of that but we won't be alone in that,” said Lowe, insisting himself on the fact that several of the 2010 teams will debut interesting designs of that component, but likely all under the rules of the FIA technical book.

We believe you will see some pretty extreme solutions on our competitors' cars as well. We think the interpretation is very clear. In certain aspects we have sought guidance from the FIA and they have come out with very clear interpretation, understanding and guidance - and we think that has been made available to all the teams,” added Lowe.

Of course, we can't wait to see the other single-seaters for the 2010 season, as only Ferrari and McLaren have shown them to the world until now. Seven teams are expected to make the Valencia testing meeting next week, so at least we'll get to see those first thing on Monday.
