Double-Apex Sends Scooter Into Oncoming Minivan

Riding unknown mountain roads can be tricky at times, with danger lurking every blind corner. From sand and potholes to wet leaves and even parked cars, you should be prepared for every situation. Oh, and don’t forget to count in double-apex corners too.

If you’re new to riding, a double-apex is a section of road where one turn is quickly followed by another one in the same direction. It doesn’t sound that dangerous, but believe me, it is and is one of the main reasons why you should never hoon your bike on roads you don’t know.

You see, when entering a double-apex corner you don’t know about, it’s usually the last second when you find out you need to turn even more in order to stay in your lane or not hit the scenery. Add that to lack of skill and you’re set for a crash.

Just like this scooterist in China who was captured on camera by another motorcyclist riding behind him on some mountain roads. Although he seems to ride slow, you can see the moment he enters the said corner, his scooter is almost at its max tilting angle.

As soon as he passes the first apex, the rider believes the road is straightening up, so he gets out wide, but he then sees the road takes yet another turn in the same direction and there’s also a minivan coming from the other way.

The rider panics, target fixation rolls in and he crashes into the car being sent flying over it. Unfortunately, the rider filming the scene was too close and couldn’t avoid hitting the fallen scooter, bringing damage to his Yamaha MT03 as well.

This brings us to today’s tips: First, don’t ride fast on unfamiliar roads. Second, don’t ride hard on scooters - they’re not designed to lean that much and their tiny wheels don’t offer much stability.
