Don’t Update Your iPhone If You Use Waze Navigation on CarPlay

Apple rolled out iOS 14.4 earlier this week with several big improvements, including a new warning on iPhone 12 whenever the operating system detects a non-genuine camera module. For CarPlay users, though, there’s not much changing in this release.

Or, at least, not at first glance, as iOS 14.4 seems to be causing a fatal error for some of those running Waze on CarPlay.

Shortly after installing this new operating system on an iPhone 11 Pro, I noticed that whenever I connected the device to CarPlay and tried to launch Waze, the app just crashed for absolutely no reason. The whole thing happens almost instantly after I tap the Waze icon on the CarPlay home screen, and the app just keeps closing no matter how many times I try to launch it.

At first glance, this doesn’t seem to be a widespread problem hitting everybody with an iPhone running iOS 14.4 and running Waze on CarPlay, but on the other hand, others too confirmed the app crashes when trying to launch it in their cars.

So right now, it’s not exactly clear what triggers the bug and how it can be resolved, but uninstalling and reinstalling Waze on the iPhone doesn’t seem to make any difference.

At this point, neither Apple nor Waze said anything about the problem. The Google-owned company has recently shipped a new testing build for iPhone users, but installing this Waze beta version doesn’t seem to fix the problem either.

The bug doesn’t appear to be related to the iPhone model that’s being used to run CarPlay, as I’m seeing similar reports coming from owners of various device generations, including iPhone SE.

At this point, if you use Waze on CarPlay and you absolutely need to update to iOS 14.4, the best way to go is to create a backup before anything else, just to be sure you can downgrade to your previous OS installation should anything go wrong in your car too.
