Donald Trump, current President of the United States, is now visiting North Carolina to assess the damage after Hurricane Florence and offer whatever encouragement he can to survivors. Apparently, it involves seeing the full half of the glass.
Trump was in New Bern the other, talking to authorities and survivors, when he committed the latest gaffe, People Magazine reports, citing the official record of the visit. It had him tell a guy who’s house had been destroyed that at least he got a “nice boat” out of the deal.
Little did it matter to him that the yacht too was destroyed.
We’ll explain: Trump was visiting with survivors, when he came across a water destroyed by the floods and high winds of Florence. In what was once the backyard, a yacht had wrecked. Trump found it hilarious that the man could now claim the boat to be his, even after he (the man) informed him (POTUS) that it wasn’t his.
“Is this your boat? Or... did it become your boat?” Trump asked, before adding with a smile: “At least you got a nice boat out of the deal.”
Speaking to reporters later, Trump was still stuck on the yacht and the issue of whether the man could claim it as his own. “That boat is wiped out, or not?” he said, adding, “Wouldn’t want to cross the ocean in it.”
“I think it’s incredible, I think it’s incredible,” he told the crowd of reporters. “To see what we’re seeing — this boat, I don’t know what happened, but this boat just came here. And do you know whose boat that is? They don’t know whose boat that is. What’s the law? Maybe it becomes theirs.”
What Trump imagined the man could do with a wrecked yacht, Trump didn’t say. Still, Twitter wasn’t amused, ripping him a new one for failing to show compassion in a tragic situation. When the man’s house and everything he had was gone, the last thing he needed was his own President joking about how maybe he could get a “nice” boat.
