Mad Men, a drama portraying one of New York’s most prestigious ad agencies of the 1960s has had a lot of fans.
As in the case of many other TV shows and films, some of the props are for sale. Since we do not focus on show-business unless cars are involved, one of Mad Men’s prop vehicles is for sale.
We are talking about a 1964 Imperial Crown Convertible, driven by Donald “Don” Draper in a single episode, when he visited Los Angeles.
As the producers of the show explained, they preferred to buy the prop vehicles instead of renting them, so they could get a small profit when selling them to fans. This car is expected to be worth more than a regular example just because it was driven by Jon Hamm’s character, Don Draper.
The TV series that won five Golden Globes and another 117 distinctions out of 346 nominations has a sufficient fan base to ensure there will be someone interested in buying this vehicle. Its only appearance in is Season four, episode three.
Only 992 1964 Imperial Crown Convertibles were ever manufactured, and around 200 are believed to exist today. So this vehicle is rarer than a Ferrari F12, for example. Out of the estimated 200 Imperial models left, this is the only one to have appeared on a popular TV show and was driven by Jon Hamm’s character, Don Draper, the leading role in the series.
Do not confuse this car for a Chrysler Imperial, as this vehicle was built by the brand called Imperial, which was Chrysler’s luxury branch of the time. The example in question is produced in for the 1964 model year, which featured cars designed entirely by Elwood Engel, the creator of the Lincoln Continental’s slab side design.
The “Crown” in the name of the model refers to a trim level, and came with power windows as standard. This particular example comes with a 413-cubic-inch “wedge” V8 engine and a push-button-select Torqueflite automatic transmission. At the time, this vehicle was praised for its handling and comfort. The former was appreciated regarding the car’s massive size, not on an overall scale.
