Domenicali: "We're Now Second Best!"

Although Ferrari have made a huge step towards the top of the field during the past few weeks – the maiden podium this season, in Monaco, is one living proof of that – team principal Stefano Domenicali insisted the “B” variant of the Ferrari F60 is still lacking downforce as compared to front-runners Brawn GP.

Earlier this year, Domenicali admitted that fitting the F60 with a double diffuser will change the car's configuration significantly. Although the latest results have certainly provided the mechanics back at Maranello with a boost of confidence and a clear sign that they're going the right way, the Italian manager still believes the biggest problems that needs fixing is F60's level of downforce.

I think for sure downforce is the most important thing that we have to recover. This will help a lot in high speed corners, but generally this is the biggest problem we need to attack,” said Domenicali.

However, the Italian did suggest that Ferrari will bring something new to the table in terms of downforce in the upcoming race, scheduled in Turkey less than 2 weeks from now. A new aerodynamic package for Monaco would have been useless – because of the multitude of low-speed corners – but new aero features are expected to make their way to the F60 at Istanbul, announced Domenicali.

I am sure in Turkey we will see that we have made a step forward in this direction, even if I would say we are pretty sure that our competitors will not stay with the same spec so they will do a step again. This is racing and this is what we love of racing – the others challenge you, you try to react, and it is the first who can recover,” admitted Domenicali.

The Ferrari boss also argued that the latest results – in Spain and Monaco – have shown that his team is now the second best on the grid, equal to or even ahead of Red Bull Racing.

In Monaco for sure - third and fourth! (...) For the future, for sure we have closed the gap and during this weekend it seems that we were good,” concluded the team manager.
