Dog With 9 Lives Leaps Out of Speeding Car Into Busy Tunnel, Survives

Let this serve as a lesson for all dog owners: driving with your pooch inside, not properly secured, could have fatal consequences. It didn’t here, but it sure came very close.

Footage captured on CCTV in Melbourne’s Eastlink Tunnel shows a dog leaping out of a speeding car, landing on the 3-lane road and narrowly escaping death or serious injury. Forget what they say about cats having 9 lives: this dog is it! Sure, this incident probably cost him a couple of them, but it’s a good thing it came only to that and didn’t turn much worse.

7News reports that the car from which the dog jumped was doing about 50 mph: the car is the first one to stop in the left lane, after the pooch went overboard. Luckily for the dog, the other drivers had also noticed what had happened, and they all brought their cars to a stop, making sure that the dog was uninjured.

You can see the video at the bottom of the page. The actual jump isn’t shown on camera, but everything else after is: you see the dog skidding on the ground, being nearly hit by one car and then running into traffic confused.

The owner pulls over and comes running to his rescue, picking him up and running back to the car with him. The pooch wasn’t injured – neither in the fall or when he was nearly hit by cars. He only suffered some sore paws after this terrible adventure.

However, none of this would have happened if the dog’s owner had secured him for the ride. Just like in the case of carseats for kids, there is a wide variety of doggie seatbelts, some of them better than others. If you’re looking only at how much you’d pay for one, know you have many choices here too: they can be as cheap as a few bucks, but you can also find more expensive variants.

Next time you drive with your pooch unsecured with a seatbelt, remember: this video is a “best case scenario.”
