The pooch spent 80 days by the side of the road waiting for its owner, who had died in a car crash in that spot.

Video of the dog is available below. The Daily Mail says, citing local reports, that the dog was by the side of the road day and night ever since August 21, when the owner died. It doesn’t say whether the dog too was involved in or had witnessed the accident that took its human, but it must have been, to know the exact spot where she was killed.

The sight of the dog became a fixture in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. Drivers became accustomed to seeing it there and would make sure to avoid it, but there was always the risk of being run over.

“It's been nearly three months now. The dog is always there, rain or shine. It's so touching,” taxi driver Guo Xinhua told the media. Guo explained that locals had tried to have the dog removed from the side of the road, since it was in danger of being hit, but it always ran away when approached. It also refused food and shunned all attempts at befriending it.

As touching as the dog’s story is, it took someone 3 months to act on it. Local charity Blue Hada is just now trying to locate the owner’s family, to have the dog rehomed, the Mail says. It is believed the pooch has been taken off the road and is now at the charity’s shelter, so at least there’s that: it is no longer in danger of being run over by speeding cars.
