Some doggos like to chase cars. Others, like Duke, like to drive them – even if it’s for very short rides with predictable outcomes.
It happened in the town of Apto, in Santa Cruz County, California, when Duke was left inside his humans’ 2001 Mercedes Benz S-Class and he took it for a very short and eventful joyride. You can probably see where this is going already. Luckily, neither Duke nor any innocent human was harmed in the incident, CBS San Francisco reports.
“Apparently the dog – named Duke – was left in the gold 2001 Mercedes-Benz S 430 and somehow managed to get his leash tangled on the car’s gear stick. As the dog moved about in the front seat, he somehow pulled the gear stick and put the car into neutral,” the report says.
There is no video of the incident, but there are photos, with one of them showing Duke still in the driver’s seat. He doesn’t look spooked – but he doesn’t look remorseful either. You can also see the pic attached to this article. Another photo shows the car stopped over some garbage bins it toppled and ran over.
“The owners of the home, Janie and Jim Black, said they watched as the car rolled backwards down the street, coming to a stop when it hit the retaining wall of their house,” the same report says.
There is no word on the kind of damage done to the car, but it whatever it is it will serve as a lesson to the owners not to leave Duke alone in the family ride again. While this might turn out to be a fun anecdote in retrospect, locking a dog inside a car isn’t safe or recommended – especially not in hot weather. Apparently, the dog (seen behind the wheel) was left in the car with the leash on. The leash got stuck on the gear shift, & pulled the car in neutral, allowing it to roll down the street into the wall.
