After an unsuccessful two-year long rebranding attempt, Chrysler finally ditched the SRT badge and put Dodge back into the Viper's name. Further more, the company celebrated this long-awaited moment with the Dodge Viper GTS-R, a track-focused machine adorned with go-faster stripes and a classic red-and-white paint job.
You might remember that during Fiat-Chrysler Group's Investor Day, which took place on May 6th, it was officially announced that SRT will be folded back into Dodge "in the near future." Well, that "near future" has come today and the bigwigs over at Dodge finally raised the white flag over the uninspiring SRT brand.
Another piece of news revealed at the FCA Investor Day is that a mid-cycle facelift and a slightly uprated engine are in the pipeline for the 2016 Dodge Viper. Until that moment comes, SRT Motorsports will race two Viper GTS-R track monsters at next weekend's Sahlen Six Hours of The Glen, marking the return of the iconic livery to the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.
You may remember that the retro livery was worn by the Dodge Viper racers that took the overall victory at Daytona in 2000 and three GTS class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (2000) and American Le Mans Series (1999 and 2000). In addition to the new livery, the SRT Motorsports racers will carry a special 100th anniversary decal.
“We are honoring the racing history of the Dodge Viper by returning to its classic colors as we are in the midst of celebrating the Dodge brand’s 100th anniversary and 100 years of American performance,” said Ralph Gilles, CEO of SRT Motorsports. “The new livery not only brings back this classic look but also enables us to continue to connect our Viper racing program to its spirited racing heritage.”
