The Dodge Viper might be dead, but it is still kicking... American manufacturer Chrysler announced today that the start of the Dodge Viper Cup series season, the first of its kind, will take place tomorrow, July 10, at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR).
The Cup Series will comprise ten races, spread for a weekend at VIR (July 10), Hallett Raceway (August 14), Pocono (September 11), Miller Motorsports Park (October 2) and Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch (October 23. Each event will be broadcast by the VERSUS sports cable network.
“This is a great addition to our motorsports offerings, which includes the IZOD IndyCar Series as well as NASCAR events, and we are excited for the opportunity to provide viewers with even more racing action,” Michael Perman, VERSUS Program Planning and Acquisitions director added.
Part of the last Vipers to roll off the assembly lines, the ACR-X is powered by the now famous 8.4l V10, developing 640 hp, 40 hp more than the regular production version.
Compared to the same production version, the suspension has also been tuned and upgraded specifically for on-track usage. The weight has been reduced by 160 pounds, while additional aerodynamic upgrades improve downforce.
For the racing series, the car has been fitted with factory-installed and designed safety equipment such as a roll cage, fuel cell and race seat.
“The Dodge Viper ACR-X is designed and built specifically for the race track,” Ralph Gilles, Dodge CEO said in a statement. “Now with VERSUS on board, race fans will have the opportunity to see our untamed and unmatched road-racing machine along with some of our talented Viper owner/drivers compete on five of the best road courses in the county as part of the Dodge Viper Cup series.”
