The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation on a number of 2004 to 2006 model year Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks due to a clutch interlock switch failure. Circa 110,000 pickups could be affected by this defect.
According to the report, three vehicle owner complaints have been filed already for one 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 and two 2006 model year Dodge Ram 3500 trucks, alleging incidents of the engine crank or start when the clutch was not engaged.
Unfortunately, one complaint involved an accident that ocurred when a child entered the vehicle and was able to start the vehicle without depressing the clutch, making the truck go forward and fatally wounding another child.
A second complaint followed the aforementioned pattern while an individual was standing directly in front of the vehicle, performing work under the hood. The clutch interlock failed to prevent the engine from cranking, with the vehicle knocking the man to the ground, but without suffering any injury.
The Chrysler Group announced it will be cooperating fully to meet or exceed all applicable safety mandates. Customers that are concerned with their vehicles are advised to contact the nearest dealer service department.
