Dodge Recalls 20,283 Police Cars

Chrysler today announced that it is recalling no less than 20,283 model year 2006-2009 Dodge Charger and Magnum units used by police officers due to what seems to be a glitch concerning the gearshift cable. Chrysler mentioned that the affected components are the power train, the automatic transmission system, the lever and linkage and the column shift. “This could allow the vehicle to move inadvertently and cause a crash without warning,” Chrysler said in the notification sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Unfortunately, Kuwaiti officials recently announced that local police officers will purchase 150 Dodge Chargers, according to Good Car Bad Car, but Chrysler did not mention if these models are also affected by the glitch.

“Chrysler is recalling 20,283 MY 2006-2009 Charger and Magnum vehicles built with the police package equipped with column shifter.
The gearshift cable may become disengaged from the steering column mounting bracket and cause an incorrect transmission gearshift position display,” Chrysler described the column shifter malfunction.

The recall is due to start in November 2008, with owners advised to contact Chrysler as soon as possible. According to the car manufacturer, the glitchy transmission system will be fixed by any authorized dealer by “adding a redundant locking mechanism to the gearshift cable at the mounting bracket to ensure proper retention and shift linkage function.”

The column shifter is not a feature of standard Charger and Magnum models but exclusively addressed to police cars delivered to police stations since 2006.
